Durable steel roof battens for Adelaide builders.

Durable steel roof battens for Adelaide builders.

Roof battens Adelaide builders trust. Steel top hat profile, sized to carry roof sheeting, wind load and foot traffic — every day of the building’s life. Heavier profile, wider spacing, weather-rated steel. The line between the build and the weather depends on these.

Builder fact

The roof batten is the unsung hero.

Battens are invisible once the sheeting goes on — but they’re literally what keeps the entire roof together. Get the batten wrong (warped, weak, wrong gauge), and everything above it suffers.

What are steel roof battens?

Steel roof battens are the horizontal members that sit on top of the roof structure and carry the roof sheeting — plus everything that sheeting has to deal with: wind uplift, rain, foot traffic during install, solar arrays added later. They’re what stands between the build and the weather.

They’re sometimes written as “roof batons” or “roof battons” — both are common misspellings of the same product. Whatever you call them, they do the same job: they’re what your sheeting fixes to.

Compared with ceiling battens, roof battens are heavier, larger, and spaced wider — they’re carrying real structural and weather load, not just interior lining. Don’t substitute ceiling battens for roof work; they aren’t sized for it.

Kspan roof battens use a top hat profile: a flat crown with two horizontal flanges that bolt or screw to the trusses below. The crown gives the batten its rigidity along its length; the flanges give the trusses a clean fixing line. Ours are fabricated in Adelaide from high-tensile steel, treated for corrosion resistance, and produced to Australian Standards.

Roof vs ceiling battens — how to choose

Builders sometimes ask whether they can substitute one for the other. Short answer: no. They’re different products doing different jobs, and they fail in different ways if you specify the wrong one. Here’s the quick comparison:

  Roof Battens Ceiling Battens
Carries Roof Sheeting + Wind + Foot Traffic Ceiling Lining (Plasterboard, Timber, Decorative)
Profile Size Heavier Top Hat Lighter Top Hat
Typical Spacing Wider (≈600–1200MM) Tighter (≈450–600MM)

Why use steel roof battens?

The choice between timber and steel roof battens used to come down to cost. Today it comes down to performance. Builders, tradies and home renovators choose steel because it wins on every metric that matters once the roof is up.

Strength.

Steel takes wind load, foot traffic and weather in its stride. Every day, for decades.

Dimensional stability.

Steel roof battens don’t warp, twist or shrink. Your sheeting fixes straight, every run, every roof.

Lifespan.

Corrosion treatment is designed in. Roof battens last as long as the roof they’re supporting.

Termite-proof.

Termites don’t eat steel. Your roof structure stays pest-free for the life of the build.

Fire performance.

Steel doesn’t ignite, propagate flame, or add fuel to a fire — a safer build in bushfire zones.

Faster on site.

Lighter than timber, designed to nest. Easier to handle, transport and fix on every roof job.

Tradespeople and home improvement enthusiasts across SA are switching to steel for the same reasons: stronger, straighter, longer-lasting. Light-gauge steel roof battens fix to your rafters or trusses with self-drilling screws and carry your sheeting through every weather event.

Roof Bettens Adelaide – Frequently asked questions

Yes — “roof baton”, “roof batons”, “roof batton” and “roof battons” are all common misspellings of roof battens. Same product, different spelling.

Our standard roof batten is a top hat profile with a 40mm crown. We supply other crown widths and BMT (base metal thickness) options for different spans and loadings, plus custom lengths cut to your spec.

Yes. Our steel roof battens work with most common roof sheeting profiles, including Colorbond, Zincalume, custom orb, trapezoidal and similar. The batten provides a true, dimensionally consistent fixing line for whichever sheeting you’re using.

Roof batten pricing depends on size, BMT, length and quantity. Bulk orders for builders running multiple jobs work out cheaper per linear metre than one-off retail purchases. Send us your spec for a quote.

Yes — we supply roof battens for both residential and commercial projects across Adelaide and SA. Custom sizes and bulk volumes are no problem.

Steel roof battens are designed to last the life of the roof. Our battens are corrosion-treated as part of fabrication, so they don’t rust out the way unprotected steel would. They also don’t warp, twist, or get eaten by termites — which timber battens can, and do.
