Roof battens · Colorbond compatible

Steel battens made for Colorbond roofing.

Kspan fabricates 40mm top hat roof battens in Adelaide that give Colorbond sheeting a straight, dimensionally true fixing line. High-tensile G550 steel, corrosion treated, produced to Australian Standards and despatched across South Australia. It is the base every Colorbond roof is fixed to.

Why steel

Why steel battens are essential for Colorbond.

Colorbond sheeting is roll formed to fine tolerances, and it shows every fault in the frame beneath it. A Colorbond roof is only as straight as the battens it is screwed to. Timber can warp, twist and shrink over time. Steel stays exactly where you fixed it.

//01

Consistently true

Every batten is dimensionally alike and straight, so sheeting fixes true on every run, with clean lines from ridge to gutter.

//02

Built for the load

Sized to carry sheeting plus wind uplift, rain and foot traffic during install, and solar arrays added later.

//03

Corrosion treated

Treated during fabrication for a long working life, matched to the lifespan of the steel sheeting above it.

//04

Termite proof

Termites do not eat steel. The structure under your sheeting stays pest free for the life of the build.

//05

Safer in fire zones

Steel does not ignite, propagate flame or add fuel to a fire, a safer base for builds in bushfire prone areas.

//06

Faster on site

Lighter than timber and made to nest, so battens are easy to stack, transport, handle and fix.

Suits most common profiles, including Colorbond, Zincalume, custom orb and trapezoidal sheeting.

Spacing and spans

Recommended batten spacing for Colorbond sheets.

Batten spacing is set by span tables and the wind classification of the site, not by habit. Most residential jobs land between 600mm and 1200mm centres, with tighter centres where wind loads are higher. Confirm centres against the sheeting manufacturer’s span tables for your profile, and against AS 1562 and AS 4055 for your wind region.

Kspan 40-55

0.55mm BMT, 0.714 kg/m. The lighter of the two options, specified widely for light gauge residential roofs.

Kspan 40-75

0.75mm BMT, 0.974 kg/m. The heavier duty option for wider centres, higher loads and commercial applications.

600mm 8.39 7.04 13.73 12.42
900mm 3.89 3.06 6.09 5.16
1200mm 2.05 1.60 3.22 2.65

Unlapped, three span continuous. Design assumptions: all spans equal, capacities calculated with roof sheets attached to the crown, deflection load required to obtain SPAN/150, support member assumed G450 steel. Source: Kspan engineered span data.

Installation

Installing roof battens for a Colorbond roof.

The top hat profile is designed to make installation fast and accurate, so the frame is right before the first sheet goes down.

Order to length.

Battens come in 6100mm, 7500mm and 8000mm standard lengths, square cut or delta cut, or custom cut to your spec so there is less trimming on site.

Fix through the flanges.

The two flanges sit flat on rafters or trusses and take self-drilling screws, with a placement groove that guides screw location for fast, accurate fixing.

Sheet to the crown.

The flat 40mm crown gives sheeting a rigid, continuous fixing line, and the textured surface improves grip when fixing cladding. Capacities assume sheets fixed to the crown.

Easy to stack, transport and handle on site, which saves hours on every roof.

Frequently asked questions.

Yes. Kspan steel battens work with most common sheeting profiles, including Colorbond, Zincalume, custom orb and trapezoidal. The batten gives whichever profile you are laying a true, dimensionally consistent fixing line.

Spacing is set by the sheeting span tables and the wind classification of the site, and most residential jobs land between 600mm and 1200mm centres. Check your centres against AS 1562 and AS 4055 for your wind region, or send us the spec and we will size it with you.

The 40-55 has a 0.55mm BMT and is specified widely for light gauge residential roofs. The 40-75 has a 0.75mm BMT for wider centres, higher loads and commercial applications. The design capacity table above covers both.

Steel roof battens are designed to last the life of the roof they support. Kspan battens are corrosion treated during fabrication, and they do not warp, twist or get eaten by termites the way timber battens can.

Pricing depends on size, BMT, length and quantity, and bulk orders for builders running multiple jobs work out cheaper per linear metre. Send your spec through the quote form and we typically reply within one business day.
