Steel top hat battens for Adelaide builders.
Light-gauge steel framing for Adelaide builders.
Top hat battens Adelaide builders trust — the profile family behind both our ceiling and roof battens. Flat crown, two flanges, fabricated locally from G550 high-tensile steel to AS/NZS Standards.

What is a top hat batten?
A top hat batten is a length of cold-formed steel shaped like the silhouette of a formal top hat in cross-section: a flat crown sitting above two horizontal flanges that flare out on either side. The flanges fix down to the structural frame (truss, joist, or stud); the crown sits up off the frame, ready to carry whatever’s attached on top — ceiling lining, roof sheeting, wall cladding.
That simple geometry is what makes steel top hat battens so useful in modern Australian building. The raised crown gives the batten stiffness along its length, the flanges give your fixings a reliable, repeatable bite into the frame below, and the gap underneath lets air and condensation move where they need to.
Why builders specify top hat battens
Top hat battens have become the default profile across Australian residential and commercial builds for four practical reasons:
Stiffness without weight.
The raised crown acts as a structural rib. Carries more load per metre than a flat strip of the same gauge.
Easy, repeatable fixing.
The two flat flanges give self-drilling screws a clean bite into the frame below. Same fixing line every time.
Built-in ventilation
gap.
The crown sits proud of the frame by 22mm or 40mm. Air and moisture move through, reducing condensation risk.
Dimensionally consistent.
Cold-formed steel keeps its dimensions over time. Won’t warp, twist or shrink like timber battens do.
Kspan top hat batten sizes
Kspan fabricates steel top hat battens in two crown sizes, each engineered for a specific job in the build. Both share the same top hat profile family — same flat crown, same two flanges — just sized differently for what they need to carry.
22mm / Ceiling
22mm Top Hat — Ceiling Battens
Section 22-42, BMT 0.42mm. Sized to carry plasterboard, timber lining and decorative ceiling panels across the structural frame above. Lighter profile, tighter spacing.
40mm / Roof
40mm Top Hat Battens — Roof
Section 40-55, BMT 0.55mm. Sized to carry roof sheeting, wind load and foot traffic. The 40mm top hat battens are our most-specified roof product.
Outside the two standard sizes, Kspan can fabricate custom top hat battens on request — different crown widths, BMTs, lengths and quantities — for builds with non-standard requirements. Send us your spec and we’ll quote.

Standards and compliance
Every Kspan top hat batten is manufactured to the Australian Standards that govern cold-formed steel, loading codes, and roof/wall cladding design:
